Abstract

The invention of gunpowder, which paved the way for the emergence offirearms, goes back to the 9 th century. Gunpowder is composed of saltpeter, charcoal andsulfur. Throughout history, there were many experiments about the correct amount and sort ofthese components in order to produce the highest quality gunpowder. During the Ottomanperiod, the places where gunpowder was manufactured were calledBaruthane (gunpowderfactory) . The first Baruthane buildings date back to the 15 th century.The Ottomans began to use firearms in the 15 th century, and it was a problem to carrythe gunpowder that was indispensable for these weapons. For this reason, the idea of placingthe gunpowder in a chamber accelerated the development of gunpowder flasks. Someexamples of Ottoman gunpowder flasks are exhibited at the Harbiye Military Museum.Gunpowder flasks were made in the shape of horns, gourds and scabbard tips, out of materialssuch as leather, metal, bone and wood. Each of the gunpowder flasks used throughout the history is a work of art, and hastaken its place in museum collections.

Baruthanelerin Osmanl ı döneminde ilk in ş as ı XV. yüzyı la kadargitmektedir.Osmanl ı Devletinin XV. yüzyı ldan itibaren kullanmaya ba ş lad ı ğ ı ate ş li silahları nvazgeçilmez unsuru olan barutun nas ı l ta ş ı naca ğ ı sorusuna cevaplar aranm ı ş tı r.
