Abstract
The Ottoman State entered the First World War upon the bombardment of the Russian ports in October 1914 by the Ottoman fleet sailing in the Black Sea following the Alliance Agreement between the Ottoman State and Germany. Thereupon, the Russian armies crossed the Ottoman-Russian border on 1 November 1914, and launched an operation on Erzurum. Trabzon and its environs were of great importance for the Turkish Supreme Military Command, because any possible occupation of this region by the enemy would cause a serious difficulty for the 3rdArmy in Erzincan. Since the road connection to the Caucasian front was insufficient, the Turkish authorities had to reinforce and supply the combatant troops through the Black Sea. Therefore, the focal point of the Russian occupation in the Black Sea region was Trabzon, which was a port of supply. Thus started the Russian naval operation that would last at intervals from the start of the Great War until the de facto occupation of Trabzon on 18 April 1916. The Turkish Supreme Military Command had already given cover and camouflage order to the coastal troops. These coastal detachments were ordered to attack on the Russian border posts and to prevent the Russian forces from reinforcing the troops in Eastern Anatolia, and took action together with the local people organized by the Ottoman Special Organization [Teşkilât-ı Mahsusa]. Although the Turkish troops advanced as far as Batumi at first, they were compelled to retreat as Russia which continuously reinforced its forces by sea and land; consequently, it became difficult for the Turks to reinforce the 3rdArmy. All the villages, towns and cities including Trabzon that lined up along the coast were one by one exposed to Russian occupation; and the Turkish-Muslim people had to migrate westwards.
