Abstract
The withdrawal of the British troops to Kut-al-amara following the Battle of Ctesiphon -one of the most important engagements at the Iraqi front, and their being surrounded there for about five months signify an uttermost successful period in the Turkish military history. The British forces under the command of General Townshend strongly fortified the surroundings of Kut-al-amara; therefore, Turkish troops could not enter the city. However, they prevented the arrival of outer reinforcements in the area. Many battles were fought with the reinforced British forces for about five months and thousands of soldiers fell martyrs. Similarly, the British lost a considerable number of soldiers, yet were not able to save General Townshend from being besieged. The surrounded British troops suffered from food shortage since the supporting forces failed to come to their help. Some victuals were provided from the local people, but this was not a long-term solution. Moreover, most of the food assistance intended from air and sea could not be received. Another problem for the British concerning food was the Indian soldiers constituting a great amount of the forces. After some time, the British had to eat horse meat, but the Indians refused it. Thus, the British had to issue fatwa to persuade them. When the region became deprived of any assistance and the rate of deaths increased due to starvation, General Townshend had to surrender
