HYBRIDITY IN FURNITURE DESIGN DURING MODERNIZATION PROCESS

Abstract

The Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau styles that emerged in the early 20th century can be regarded as approaches that symbolize transition in the field of design as tracing the previous periods and influencing the later periods of their time and can be described as hybrid. In this context, the in between status is discussed together with the classical and modern period taken over furniture samples, and the use of a hybrid formal language expressing the transition was discussed. Hybridity is defined with using shape grammar on chairs` surfaces , that make it easier to comprehend the chairs. In the process, firstly the sample chairs belonging to both the classical and the modern periods are determined and the shapes of the surfaces are expressed in a graphic way. Afterwards, the formal relations with the other approaches of the two periods have been determined by matching the components. All of these have revealed the relation between modern and classical period, and have shown how this relationship is integrated together with the concept of hybridity, through chair designs.

20. yüzyılın başlarında ortaya çıkan Arts and Crafts ve Art Nouveau stilleri tasarım alanında geçişisimgeleyen, kendilerinden önceki dönemin izlerini taşırken kendilerinden sonraki dönemleri de etkileyenyaklaşımlar olarak kabul edilebilir ve melez olarak tanımlanabilirler. Çalışmada arada olma hali, klasik vemodern dönem ile birlikte tartışılarak; mobilya örnekleri üzerinden geçişi ifade eden melez bir biçimseldil kullanımı tartışmaya açılmıştır. Melezlik ifadesi ise sandalyelerin okunmasını kolaylaştıran yüzeylerüzerinden biçim grameri kullanılarak tanımlanmıştır. Süreçte, öncelikle hem klasik hem de moderndöneme ait, geçiş dönemi ile benzerlik gösteren örnek sandalyelerin tespiti yapılmış ve yüzeylerinbiçimleri grafik bir dille ifade edilmiştir. Sonrasında iki dönemin diğer stillerle biçimsel ilişkisi bileşenlerinçakıştırılmasıyla saptanmıştır. Tüm bunlar, Arts and Crafts ve Art Nouveau stillerinin modern ve klasikdönemlerle ilişkisini ortaya koymuş ve arada olmak yani melezlik kavramıyla nasıl bütünleştiğini sandalyetasarımları üzerinden tanımlamıştır.
