Abstract

In the Christian and Jewish traditions, angels are the abstract beings, which worship and serve to God. Since its beginning, the Christian art took the angels as a subject in the religious scenes and pictured their appearances through the sacred texts. In Early Christian Art, angels were thought to be created out of the heavenly light, so they were portrayed in white clothes, usually male and bearded or beardless. Angels were described with wings after the first half of the 4th century A.D. From the 5th century on, angels have been described while flying. In Byzantium, angels were often depicted in the costumes of the guardsmen of the palace. The ecclesiastical hierarchy of Pseudo Dionysius was carried out in the representation of the angels in Early Christian Art and Byzantine Painting Art. The Ecclesiastical hierarchy consists of three groups. The first group is formed of the Angel-like beings in the Old Testament: Serafim, Kerubim and Tronoi, the second group: Kyriotetes, Dynamis, Exusiai, and in the third group there are Archai, Archangeloi, Angeloi. Angels are denoted with the words as "man", "human" and "divine" in the Old Testament and the New Testament. Artists pictured the angels according to these descriptions in the Holy Books.
