Abstract

Tripartite plan is a very prevalent plan type used both in domestic and in public architecture in Mesopotamia throughout V-IV. millennium BC. This layout, that is used firstly in the Ubaid Period, is certainly pre-planned and has extended families. In its simplest form, it consists of a long rectangular main room (salon) and several other rooms arranged both longer side of this salon. Tripartite plan appears to have developed and gone through a process of spatial evolution the periods of Ubaid and Uruk, which are the cultural periods survived throughout V-IV. millennium BC in Mesopotamia. Thus, it constitutes several sub-types. Although displaying some differences in the development process, it reveals a decidedly common tradition in terms of general concept. This plan is also proto-type of the central courtyard plan. This article is an attempt to analyze the roots and evolutionary stages of this plan scheme.
