LATE ROMAN WATER STRUCTURES AND WATER SUPPLY IN SINOP

Abstract

Sinop was one of the major ports on the coast of the Black Sea during the Roman period and was a city with significant population. Structures from the Roman era indicate a high level of prosperity. In this study, we attempt a reconstruction of the Roman water canals and water supply systems within the city of Sinop using data obtained through archaeology, physical geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) technologies. Water canal routes were recreated on the basis of the results of GIS spatial analysis.

Özet

Sinop; Karadeniz kıyısında yer alan Roma dönemi önemli liman şehirlerinden biriydi ve önemli oranda bir nüfus barındırıyordu. Roma yapıları Sinop'ta Roma döneminin yüksek bir refah seviyesini göstermektedir. Bu çalışmada; Sinoptaki Roma dönemi su kanalları ve su temini konularına ait rekonstrüksiyon yapılması hedeşenmiştir. Rekonstrüksiyonda; Fiziki Co¤rafya ve Arkeoloji verileri Co¤rafi Bilgi Sistemleri (CBS) ve Uzaktan Algılama (UA) teknolojileri kullanılmıştır. Analiz sonuçlarına dayandırılan su kanal güzergâhı oluşturulmuştur.
