Abstract

Because of its geographic significant location and administrative alteration the city was encounters and counterpoint for varied cultures. Zeugma stelai appears as enormous group which differs with its arrangement and subject manner from adjoining areas. This article points out briefly common characteristic of stelai and 12 recent finds are presented. These stelai are carved of a characteristic yellowish, soft chalky limestone. Stelai produced between mid of 1st century AD and late 3rd century AD. Schematically, stelai designed with symbolic eagle (for man) and basket (for woman) which refers to the gender of deceased and portrait bust of the deceased. The men are wear chiton and himation who seems like Graeco-Roman. Despite women with headgear indicates that their local Semitic descent. Some Palmyrene influences (e.g. headgears) appear on portraits but its show no specific parallels. Funerary inscriptions prevailingly in Greek are positioned out of aedicule or niche. The inscriptions on the stelai are mostly succinct formula which ends with usually êlupe xa re (or xeÇre) and infrequently êvre xa re (or xeÇre). Names inform us information about the inhabitants consisted of varied ethnicities of the city. Names are predominantly Graeco-Macedon but also Latin and Semitic that proves the city s cosmopolitan character.

Özet

Mezar stellerinin üretiminde sarımsı renkte, yumuşak kireçtaşı kullanılmıştır. Zeugma mezar stelleri MS 1. yüzyıl ortaları ile MS 3. yüzyılın sonlarına kadar üretilmiştir. Steller üzerinde sıklıkla kartal ve/veya sepet figürleri ya da ölen kişinin portresi yer almaktadır. Portreli stellerde figürler çoğu kez khiton ve himation giyimli olup nadiren paludamentum ve khlamys giyimli erkekler ile Doğulu özellikte başlıklar (özellikle Palmyradaki kadın figürlerinin kullandığına benzer) takan kadınlar görülür. Yazıtlar çoğunlukla Grekçe yazılmıştır ancak az sayıda da olsa Latince yazıt bulunan steller bulunmaktadır. Yazıtlar aedicula veya niş dışına yerleştirilmiştir. Yazıtlar êlupe xaıre (veya êlupe xeÇre) ve êvre xaıre (veya êvre xeÇre) şeklinde standart bir teselli sözcüğü ile ölen kişinin isminden oluşur. Yazıtlardaki isimler kentte yaşan etnik kimlikler hakkında bilgi vermektedir. simlere göre kent sakinlerinin birçoğu Greko-Makedon kökenlidir fakat bunun yanında Latin ve Semitik isimler bulunması kentin kozmopolit yapısını göstermektedir
