Abstract

An amount of 102.500 seal impressions (bullae) were found in 1998-2000 during the salvage excavations carried out by the archaeological team of Gaziantep Museum in Zeugma. The depictions of the figures of the seal impressions are generally in Roman style. The subjects of these are kings, emperors, philosophers, gods, goddesses and animals a.s.o. on the obverse side. Less than a hundred a few of the seal impressions with portraits of kings belong to the Late Hellenistic period. Traces of papyrus and parchments of the documents attached on the reverse side were found. The subject of this article is the portraits of Hellenistic kings chosen from among the seal impressions of Zeugma. There are less than a hundred of portraits of Hellenistic kings on the seal impressions of Zeugma. The features of the figures are idealized, as was typical in the art of the Late Hellenistic Kingdom: a strongly emphasized turn of the neck, an idealistic long face, wavy hair, broad cheeks, full forehead, deep eyes, a remarkably straight nose and a round chin. The kings on these seal impressions are presented in full profile. They have a flattering diadem band, long wavy hair and idealistic face. Some of them are similar to the figures that were named the soldier kings in the Seleucid period with chlamys, armour, long hair and idealistic face. Portraits of Seleucid, Pontic, and Ptolemaic kingdoms of the Late Hellenistic period are seen on some seal impressions of Zeugma. There are several similarities among this group of seal impressions: one of them is close resemblance to the late portrait of Antiochus VIII, the other is the portrait of Antiochus X Eusebes Philopator and the other is similar to the portrait of Mitridates VI Eupator. Some portraits have resemblance to the portraits of Hellenistic kings that are of the type of Alexander. For this reason, seal impressions which present the portraits of kings and refer to the style of the Late Hellenistic period must have been made between the last quarter of the Second century and the First century B.C

Bunlardan biri VIII. Antiokhos'un geç portresine benzerdir. Diğerleri Antiokhos X Eusebes Philopator ve Mitridates VI Eupator'un portrelerine yakın olarak benzemektedir. Bazı portreler ise Büyük İskender'in portre stilindedir.
