Abstract

Palaeolithic cave paintings depict human interaction with horses in art and the relationship between the horse and human beings throughout the ages, in cultural, economic, as well as in political and military life, has had an important place. The horse for the steppe communities in the world was an essential means of transport and even today has not lost its importance in passenger transport, with the horse retaining its importance and value over the course of time. In the choice of made through the tradition of burying the dead there are geographic, cultural and community factors and differences that define and exhibit a set of practices that provide important data for identification. In the 4th millennium B.C., a significant burial tradition spread in waves starting from Eurasia of burying people’s horses together with the deceased. To date studies conducted concerning the burial traditions in the East, including the written sources from China, to Britain in the West, and even over a geographical spread to North America provide evidence of this type of burial practice. Our work concerning this first tradition, its geographical spread and major centres are evaluated, then the evidence in Anatolia concerning burial practices, are discussed in chronological order to the end of the Iron Age. The practice of the burial with horses in a planned way in Anatolia seems to be mainly concentrated in the Iron Age, but beginning in the Early Bronze Age graves and with the Hittites continuing it in the 2nd millennium B.C. During this period, there were contacts with the Eurasian nomads of Anatolia, especially as a society with that of the Cimmerian-Scythian, where tradition in this respect is thought to be the main factor in its spread. However, recently conducted studies have shown this burial practice re dated to 780-770 B.C., at the Gordion tumuli KY. It awaits the results of future archaeological finds from the period of about a century before the Cimmerian invasions in the 7th century B.C., to determine from these finds the nature of the cultural continuity and of the degree of influence from this long and deep relationship with nomadic culture
