SOCIO-ECONOMIC HISTORY OF NORTHERN MYSIA REGION: AN OVERVIEW

Abstract

In ancient period, North Mysia Region which can be defined as the Northern coast of the Mysia Region, bordered by Propontis in the North, Bithynia in the East, Phrygia in the Southeast and Troas in the West. Composes the geographic borders of the study in the region, the cities founded in the colonization period with the economic advantages brought by their locations, became prominent cities of the period. Besides the privileges of connecting Aegean with the Black Sea, regionals cities such as particularly Cyzicus, Lampsacus and Parium, with a number of factors like agriculture, stock farming, fishery and mineral resources, took place in ancient sources since the time they were founded. In the study the socio economic history of the region was tried to be presented in general, principally with antique writers, and also in the light of numismatics and epigraphic evidences related to the topic.

Özet

Eskiçağ’da ana hatlarıyla kuzeyde Propontis, doğuda Bithynia, güneydoğuda Phrygia, güneyde Lydia, güneybatıda Aiolis ve batıda Troas’ın sınırladığı, Mysia Bölgesi’nin kuzey kıyıları olarak belirlenebilecek olan Kuzey Mysia Bölgesi çalışmamızın coğrafi sınırlarını oluşturmaktadır. Bölgede kolonizasyon döne-minde kurulmuş olan kentler konumlarının getirdiği ekonomik avantajlar ile dönemin gözde kentleri olmuşlardır. Başta Kyzikos, Lampsakos ve Parion gibi bölge kentleri kuruldukları tarihlerden itibaren Ege ve Karadeniz’i birbirine bağlamanın getirdiği ayrıcalıklar yanında tarım, hayvancılık, balıkçılık, madeni kaynaklar gibi pek çok unsur ile antik kaynaklarda sıklıkla yer almışlardır. Bu çalışmada bölge-nin sosyo-ekonomik tarihi öncelikle antik yazarlar ayrıca konu ile ilgili nümizmatik ve epigrafik kanıtlar ışığında genel olarak ortaya konulmaya çalışılmaktadır1.
