THEMOUSA OF HISTORY: CLIO

Abstract

The Mousai were the ancient Greek goddesses of inspiration in history, literatüre, science and the other arts. The Mousai are the daughters of Zeus and the Titan Mnemosyne (Memory) after the couple slept together for nine consecutive nights. There were nine Muses in Classical Greek mythology: Calliope (epic poetry), Clio (history), Urania (astronomy), Polyhymnia (hymns, religious music), Euterpe (song and elegiac poetry), Terpsichore (dance and choral song), Melpomene (drama: tragedy), Thalia (drama: comedy), and Erato (erotic and/or love poetry). In ancient Greek vase painting and art, the Mousai are depicted as beautiful young women, often with wings with a variety of musical intruments. The Mousai often appear on 5th and 4th century BCE red- and black-figure pottery. Apollo Mousagetes is, the choir leader of the Mousai and many statues of the Mousai have been found on Delos, an important cult centre to Apollo. In modern literature, the Muses are often associated with inspiration, breath, and the spoken word. Clio is one of the nine Mousai, the goddesses of history. In this guise Clio was represented holding an open scroll or seated beside a chest of books. Clio name was derived from Greek verb kleo “to make famous” or “celebrate”.

Mousalar Hellas'ta tarih, edebiyat, bilim ve diğer sanatların ilham perileriydi. Mousalar, Zeus ve Titantanrıça Mnemosyne’nin (hafıza) dokuz gece birlikte geçirmesinden sonra doğan kızlarıdır. KlasikHellen mitolojisindeki dokuz Mousa: Kalliope (epik şiir), Kleio (tarih), Urania (astronomi), Polyhymnia(ilahi, dini müzik), Euterpe (şarkı ve hüzünlü şiir), Terpsikore (dans ve korolu şarkı), Melpomene(drama: tragedya), Thalia (drama: komedya), and Erato'dur (erotik ve aşk şiiri). Antik Hellen vazoresmi ve sanatında Mousalar genellikle kanatlı değişik müzik aletleri ile güzel genç kadınlar olarakbetimlenirler. Mousalar genellikle MÖ 5 ve 4. yüzyıllarda vazo betimleri üzerinde görülürler. ApolloMousagetes Mousaların lideridir ve Apollon’un en önemli kült merkezi olan Delos’da Mousalarınbirçok heykeli bulunmuştur. Modern kaynaklarda, Mousalar genellikle ilham, nefes ve konuşmaile bağlantılıdır. Dokuz Mousadan biri olan Kleio tarihin tanrıçasıdır. Kleio betimlemelerinde elinde,göğsünde ya da otururken yanında açık bir kitap tutar biçimde verilir. Kleio adı “ünlü etmek” ya da“kutlamak” anlamındaki Hellence Kleo kelimesinden gelmektedir.
