Abstract

This article documents and technically, stylistically, and iconographically evaluates a statue of Heracles, which was unearthed by chance during a modern road repair carried out in Kocaeli Municipality Seafront Car Park in İzmit city center on September 18, 2020. Although the discovered statue is detached from its original context, it draws attention to the importance of the ancient city of Nicomedia, which lies underneath modern İzmit and served as the capital of the Roman Empire at the end of the 3rd and the beginning of the 4th century AD. The statue of Heracles with the Nemean lion’s skin wrapped around his head appears as leaning on a support on his left and is a variation of the “Weary Heracles” motif of the famous sculptor Lysippos. On stylistic grounds, the statue can be dated to the late 2nd and early 3rd century AD. It possibly once adorned an imperial public structure at the heart of Nicomedia. Heracles and his 12 Labors, together with the kings and emperors who identified themselves with Heracles for propaganda purposes were one of the most popular depictions of ancient Greco-Roman art from the 5th century BC through the 5th centuries AD. Another example of a “Weary Heracles” motif, which has hundreds of examples in many different scales and media, from miniature to colossal, from bronze to marble and even in the depictions on coins, is the colossal Heracles found in the imperial palace complex in İzmit Çukurbağ neighborhood. Both sculptures and other late 3rd century Heracles depictions that have appeared in Nicomedia imply the importance of the hero in the imperial cult and propaganda in the city
