Abstract

Although the family is considered as the smallest social unit that is established to ensure the continu ity of the human-kind, it is a solidarity and economic union owing to the realization of production, distribution and property relations within it. Besides, the family is the first place where the system ofrules, norms, values, language and symbols that ensures the child’s adaptation to the social environ ment in which he is born is learned. There is no cuneiform document in the Hittite archives about theHittite family, that is the subject of this study, but there are a number of evidences that enable us tohave an idea when looking at education, legal system, fairy tales, historical documents, magic ritualsand oracular texts. In this study, these evidences were used to analyse three different kinds of familycategories: a pantheon (family of gods) ruled by pair of deities called the Sun Goddess of Arinnaand the Storm God the royal family ruled by the king and queen, and the elementary family led byan ordinary married couple. All three family structures consist of the “mother-father-children” trio.Although the genealogical and succession system in the Hittite society has a malestream structure, and the domination of the god over the king, the king’s country, the father’s children and family inthe country indicates the existence of a patriarchal family system The goddess, who is in a similarpower relationship with the god at the head of the pantheon; the queen, who is in a complementaryrelationship with the king; and the ordinary women who manage the family together with their hus bands and have rights, all these suggest the balanced and equitable structure of the Hittite family inthis period. However, this balanced relationship also manifests itself in the relationship between fam ily and child. The cuneiform texts indicate that the Hittite family including caring parents allocatesa budget for the education of their children; Hittite laws contain provisions protecting the rights ofmothers, children and young people. The magic rituals indicate that family integrity and unity areimportant for Hittites. In historical texts, I.Hattušili, the constitutive ruler of Hittite Kingdom, doesnot expect him to be a fearless warrior who conquers countries from the heir to the throne, but agood and merciful person. II.Muršili gives up his sense of vengeance because the mother of the kingwho betrayed him fell at his feet.
