PRELIMINARY REPORT OF TRIPOLIS ROMAN STREET 2007-2009 EXCAVATION CAMPAIGNS

Abstract

Roman street is about in the middle of the city and lies east-west direction. As a part of enviromental cleaning andmonitoring in 1994, excavations have been held for the first time about the middle of the street. During the firstacademical excavation which has started in 2007, this area was selected as the working centre. Excavations werebeing held not only on the street but also at the northern and southern areas of the street. Excavation process hasbeen maintained on the street and around it in 2008 and 2009. In consequence of excavations it is determined thatthere are stoas on both sides of the street and street s base has a smooth structure. Use of the street has ended in alater period and a fortification wall has been constructed which also partially involved the north stoa of the street.There are also numerous structures at the north and the south of the street. Some of them are contemporary withbuilding date of the street and some of them date later periods. During the excavation process substantial finds areencountered.

Özet

Roma caddesi kentin yaklaşık orta kesimindedir ve doğu-batı doğrultusunda uzanmaktadır. İlk kez 1994 yılındaçevre temizliği ve düzenleme kapsamında caddenin yaklaşık ortasına gelen bölümünde kazılar yapılmıştır. 2007yılında başlayan ilk bilimsel kazı çalışmalarında, çalışmaların merkezi olarak bu alan seçilmiştir. Sadece caddeüzerinde değil, caddenin kuzeyinde ve güneyindeki alanlarda da kazılar yapılmıştır. 2008 ve 2009 yıllarında caddeüzerinde ve çevresinde kazı çalışmalarına devam edilmiştir. Çalışmaların sonucunda caddenin her iki yanındastoalarının bulunduğu, tabanının ise düzgün bir yapıya sahip olduğu görülmüştür. Daha sonraki bir dönemdecaddenin kullanımı sona ermiş ve caddenin kuzey stoasını da kısmen içine alacak şekilde bir sur duvarı inşa edil- miştir. Caddenin kuzey ve güneyinde ise bir kısmı caddenin inşa edildiği dönemde yapılmış olan, bir kısmı ise dahasonraki dönemlerde inşa edilen çok sayıda yapı yer almaktadır. Kazı çalışmaları sırasında çok zengin buluntularlada karşılaşılmıştır.
