Abstract
Objective: Coronary artery variations are one of the most com- mon anatomical changes, and its incidence is reported to be ap- proximately 2%. These variations are usually asymptomatic, and they are detected incidentally; however, they can cause sudden death in young athletes. Although catheter angiography is used as the basic method for detecting coronary artery variations, cur- rently the popularity of non-invasive methods is increasing. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of coronary artery outflow variations in the Eastern Anatolia Region and to show the detectability of these variations with the same com- puted tomography (CT). Materials and Methods: A total of 934 cases were included in the retrospective study. Coronary artery variations in these cas- es were identified and defined. Results: Coronary artery exit anomaly was detected in 28 cases (2.99%). In the group of patients with coronary artery variation, the mean age was 53 ± 9 years. Conclusion: Although coronary artery anomalies are generally asymptomatic and benign; anomalies classified as malignant can cause sudden deaths, especially in young athletes. Coro- nary CT angiography is a non-invasive, successful method that can be used in the detection of coronary artery pathologies and variations, especially in low-risk asymptomatic individuals.
