Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine the infectious agents, antibiotic sensitivity and risk factors causing amputation of diabetic foot. Methods: Forty patients with diabetic foot infection hospitalized and infectious agents, antibiotic sensitivity and risk factors causing amputation were researched. Results: Enterococcus faecalis (18/40 patients) and Staphylococcus aureus (14/40 patients) were most frequently detected. All of the patients with Staphylococcus aureus were found to be sensitive to vancomycin and 77.7% of the patients with Enterococcus faecalis were found to be sensitive to ciprofloxacin. Osteomyelitis, anemia and high wound grades were found as the risk factors causing amputation. Conclusion: In relation to these results, the combination of ciprofloxacin and vancomycin were found out to be an effective alternative to the treatment. The presence of osteomyelitis and anemia increase the amputation rate of diabetic foot.
