Abstract

Purpose: The present study involves with Ultrastructural changes of myocardium obtained from patients with progressive systemic sclerosis. Methods: Cardiac catheterization was performed in 11 patients with progressive systemic sclerosis. Myocardial biopsy samples were obtained from the right ventricular apex via femoral venous approach and processed for electron microscopy using conventional method. Results: Myofibrillar degeneration, mitochondrial abnormalities, reduplication of capillary basal lamina, increasement of collagen fibers and abundant mast cells containing dense or pale granules were the main Ultrastructural alterations. Conclusion: In accordance with the Ultrastructural observations it could be assumed that mast cells might be a factor in the pathogenesis of PSS.
