Abstract

In this study it was purposed to evaluate the effectiveness of 0.05 mg of xylazine/kg administrated epidurally to cows on perineal and para-lumbal analgesia. Xylazine HCl was administrated epidurally into the first caudal interverte-bral space in 20 cows at a dose of 0.05 mg/kg body weight and was made up to a total volume of 5.0 ml with 0.9% NaCl, The onset and duration of perineal-paralumbal analgesia and ataxia were assessed by the use of a low voltage current and the cow's responses to superficial and deep musculer pinpricks at 5 minutes intervals until 30 minutes and then 30 minutes intervals until 120 min¬utes after administration. Also systemic and side effects of xylazine as like heart rate, respiratory rate, rate of ruminal contraction and sedation were determined. Although it were provided the perineal analgesia within 15 minutes in all animals, the adequate abdominal analgesia was completely induced in 14 animals within 30 minutes, 4 of the animals were partly observed and 2 of animals didn't have adequate abdominal analgesia. İn this study perineal and abdominal analgesia were the adequate level for 120 minutes. Epidural administration of-xylazine to cows decreased heart rate, respiratory rate and rate of ruminal contraction within 15 minutes in all animals. However these rates were getting increase after 60-90 minutes and were reached the normal levels at 120 minutes. Sedation-a sleeping-like state evidenced by lowering of the head and dropping of the upper eyelids (% 90), tympani (% 30) and the milk dripping (% 10) were noticed. As a result, this study indicated that 0.05 mg of xylazine Ikg injected into the upper epidural space in healty cows which don't have cardio-pulmonary and gastrointestinal diseases could prove the adequate surgical analgesia at the level of the abdominal flank-perineal and could easily use in the obstetrics and gynaecological cases which are necessary for standing perineal and flank surgery as like visceral prolapsus, cesearan section, teat tramp due to its the prolonged desensitization.
