Abstract

In this research, all cattle in 5 closed dairy herds from 3 different geographical regions of Turkey were sampled for detection of BVD virus and BVDV specific neutralising antibodies. As a total 3360 leukocytes and sera samples were held. Serum Neutralisation (SN) with reference strain (NADL) was used for detection of neutralising antibodies and Peroxidase Linked antibody Assay (PLA) for virological control. The seroprevalance of BVDV infection was detected as 64.2%, but distribution according to herds was variable between 7.7% and 83.4%. In the result of virus isolation attempts, 10 animals from 4 herds were assayed as BVDV positive. After first isolation, 9 of 10 animals were able to sampled again and 8 were found to be persistent viraemic. Prevalance of persistent infection was calculated as 0.25%. The first detection of persistent infection with BVDV in Turkey was allowed by this research.
