Abstract
In this study, 12413 blood samples obtained from cattle which are not vaccinated with bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) vaccine in 26 dairy herds were used. Blood samples were tested for BVD virus using PLA technique. Antibodies against BVDV were examined using microneutralization technique. In the result of virus isolation attempts, 40 animals from 10 herds were found as to be BVDV carrier. (Of 23 cattle of which resampling was possible) and 9 cattle were found to be persistently viraemic. The overall and herd-based prevalence values of peristent infection were calculated as 0.07% and 0.61-0.83%, respectively. All herds sampled were found to be positive for BVDV infection. The seroprevalence of BVDV infection was ranged between serologically 0.6% and 70.0% in the herds. The results show that BVDV infection is widespread in these herds. Furthermore, recommendation to the control of BVDV infection for dairy herds were presented.
