Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different periodontal thera¬pies used to eliminate oral malodor in controlled diabetic patients. Although little was known about the causes of oral malodor, it was believed to have a strong association with periodontal disease. In our study, while the periodontal status and treatment needs of 111 controlled diabetic patients have been as¬sessed by using CPITN index oral malodor has also been evaluated by using or-ganoleptic method. Mean age of our patients was 42,6±0,18. Both edentolous and patients who were using fixed or removable dentures were not included in the study. With respect to the treatment protocol, patients were divided into two groups. The first group received periodontal treatment only while the sec¬ond group was given 0,2% chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) mouth-rinse. With routine periodontal treatment and prior to periodontal treatment, 2 cc to¬tal saliva was taken and pH was determined respectively. Evaluation of the CPITN values have shown that, the number of the extracted teeth and the probing pocket depths increased with age. All diabetic patients required oral hygiene reinforcement and scaling. The pH was values were reduced after the treatment but the reduction was not found to be statistically significant (p>0,05). There was a significant improvement in oral malodor level (p
