Abstract
The abrasive effect of porcelain on opposing surfaces is a serious problem. In this study the abrasive effect of glazed and polished porcelain surfaces on op¬posing natural tooth enamel, Ni-Cr alloy and acrylic denture tooth was investi¬gated. For this purpose a machine, reproducing the horizontal and vertical components of the chewing forces were developed. Following this 30 metal fused glazed porcelain surface samples and 30 metal fused polished porcelain surface samples of 30x15x2 mm were prepared. Total number of 60 abrasive porcelain surface samples and 20 natural tooth enamel, 20 Ni-cr alloy and 20 acrylic denture tooth of 3mm diameter, 6mm height totally 60 samples of that will be abraded were attached to the machine, and the tests were applied. In this study, to evaluate the amount of abrasion, weight loss and volume loss methods were used, after the specimens were tested uder lOOOgr. of accelerated load and 0.2 second contact of 5000 cycles. The results of abrasive effect of porcelain obtained from the weight loss of nat¬ural tooth enamel, Ni-Cr alloy and acrylic denture tooth were found very simi¬lar to each other. On the other hand the volume loss was an important clinical factor which showed that Cr-Ni alloy abraded least, natural tooth enamel abraded 3 times more than Ni-Cr alloy, and acrylic denture tooth abraded 9 times more than Ni-Cr alloy. From the statistical analysis it was concluded that, glazed porcelain surface was more abrasive than the polished porcelain surface, therefore when working on porcelain restorations, removing the glazed chewing surface is appropriate. In addition, it is recommended to use materials having the same abrasion resistance on opposing surfaces.
