Use alloplastic silicon elastomers in maxillofacial surgery

Abstract

Different kinds of autogeneic or allogeneic materials can be used in replace¬ment or reconstruction of the facial defects which can resulted from various kinds of etiological factors. An alloplastic material can be defined as an inert foreign substance implanted within living tissue. Currently these materials are classified as metals, ceramics and polymers due to their chemical composition. There are vast number of polymer implant materials in clinical use today. In the maxillofacial area, some of the polymers are used for bone replacement although majority of these materials are used in soft tissues. In this study, clincal use of silicon elastomer in chin augmentation and temporomandibular joint rehabilitation is presented along with a report of two cases.

Özet

Yüz bölgesinde değişik sebeplerle meyda¬na gelebilen defektlerin tamirinde çeşitli otojenik ve allojenik materyaller kullanılmaktadır. Biomateryal olarak adlandırılan bu allojenik materyaller kimyasal özelliklerine göre başlıca; metaller, seramikler ve polimerler olarak sınıflandırılmaktadır. Polimerler olarak adlandırılan sentetik plastiklerin değişik formları üretilerek, diğer cerrahi dallarında olduğu gibi çene cerrahisinde de yaygın bir kullanım alanı bulmuştur. Bu çalışmada polimerlerin en sık kullanılan formu olan polimetilsiloksan'ın (silikon), çene ucu augmentasyonlanndaki ve temporomandi-büler eklem rehabilitasyonlanndaki kullanımları iki örnek vaka üzerinde sunulmuştur.
