Abstract
The occurrence of some hyperplastic and -atrophic gingival lesions may be related to the ovarian hormones. This relation may be investigated by showing the presence of the specific receptors in gingival tissues. Immunohistochemical methods are among the best methpds to show the exact location and the density of the receptors. In the present study, the presence of estrogen and progesterone reteptors in gingival tissues obtained from, 17 female and 11 male patients has been investigated. Estrogen receptors were found on the nuclei of the gingival epithelial cells and the endothelium of the submucosal vasculer structures. The receptor density was greater in samples from the female patients.None of the tissue components showed progesterone receptors.
