Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare the surfaces hardness of different resin modified restorative materials by using two different light cure units. A resin modified glass-ionomer cement (Vitremer), compomer (Dyract) and composite resin (Herculite XRV) were used in this study. Forty-two round holes, each 5 mm in diameter and 2 mm deep were prepared in Plexiglas. The restorative materials were condensed into the holes and covered at the top and bottom with transparent mylar strips. The material was compressed at both ends by 1mm thick glass slides. Polymerization of samples were made with conventional light cure unit Translux EC and new developed light cure unit Elipar Highlight The light source tip of the curing units was positioned directly over the mylar strip and light cured 40 seconds from the top surface. Three surface hardness measurements on the top and bottom surface of each specimen were made with a Barcol impresser immediately after polymerization. 42 test specimens were stored in a dark container in distilled water at the room temperature. Surface hardness measurements on the top and bottom surface of each specimen were recorded at 24 hours and 21 days. Surface hardness were compared by Analysis of Variance and Duncan test. The results showed that the top surface hardness of all specimens at near the light cure source was higher than those on the bottom surface. The best surface hardness measurements on the top and bottom surfaces were recorded for the composite specimens with both of light cure units at the each test time (P
