Abstract
Low-fusing porcelains have been developed for use with titanium and gold alloys. However some physical and mechanical properties of low-fusing ceramics made them an alternative choice for all type of ceramic alloys. In this study, the hardness of a low-fusing porcelain was compared with a conventional high fusing porcelain. Using a low-fusing (Finesse, Ceramco, Addleston, Weybridge, U.K.) and a high fusing (Ceramco, Ceramco, Addleston, Weybridge, U.K.) porcelain, 22 disk samples (11 samples for each porcelain type) 10 mm in diameter and 2 mm in height, were prepared in a teflon index and routine porcelain firings were made. Then the samples were embedded in polyesther cylindrical blocks and the surfaces of the porcelain samples were polished by using an abrazing and polishing machine (Gripo 2V, Metkon, Bursa). Three indentations on each disk were made with a Vickers indenter with a microhardness tester (MHTZ, Matsuzawa Seiki Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan) loaded with 1 kg for 20 seconds. Two readings were made for each indentation, and the average of the 6 readings was used to determine the hardness value for each disk. One-way analysis of variance was performed to evaluate the Vickers hardness values of two different type of porcelain groups (low- and high fusing) and no statistically significant difference was found (p>0.05).
