Abstract
Due to their flexibility and soft structure, soft lining materials are used in order to prevent or decrease adverse effects of hard denture based materials on denture bearing tissues. Yet, they have important disadvantages which restrict their clinical use including loss of flexibility in time, absorbtion of water, lack of color stability, lack of bond strength of the denture bases and decrease in fracture strength of the denture. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of permanent silicon based soft lining material on the transverse strength of three different poly (methyl methacrylate) denture base resins polymerised with different methods. 21 standard test specimens at the dimension of 65x10x3 mm accordance with ADA specification No.12 prepared to form the control group. Autopolymerizing acrylic resin with injection molding, microwave energy and conventional heat cured acrylic resins ( 7 of each ) were each used in the preparation of specimens respectively. Study groups consisted of 21 specimens made using 1 mm soft lining material (Molloplast-B) on 2 mm hard denture base resins. Prepared specimens underwent three-point bending test in the Lloyd universal testing machine. The transverse strength, elasticity modulus and maximum deflection values obtained, were statistically analyzed by ANOVA and Duncan tests. In conclusion, transverse strength, elasticity modulus and maximum deflection values were found to be significantly decreased in silicone relined denture base polymers, compared to control group. In addition, microwave energy polymerised denture base resin was found to have higher transverse strength and elasticity modulus values in both control and study groups than the other materials.
