Abstract
Failures occur in the restorations due to the microleakage after the polymerization of the composite resins. The aim of this in-vitro study was to determine the differences of the polymerization methods applied with the use of halogen light sources (control group) and standard, soft-start and fast-cure polymerization methods applied with the use of LED (light emitting diode) light sources by means of microleakage. CI II slot cavities are prepared on the mesial and distal surface of 36 intact human molar teeth. Then the teeth were randomly divided into 6 groups each containing 6 teeth with 12 cavities. In the Group 1 (control); standard polymerization method was applied with the use of halogen light sources for 40 seconds with a light density of 600 mW/cm2 and other 5 groups were polymerized with the use of LED light sources with a light density of 400 mW/cm2. Standard polymerization was applied to Groups 2 and 4 for 40 seconds. Soft-start polymerization was applied to Groups 3 and 5 for 40 seconds and soft-start polymerization methods was applied to Group 6 for 10 seconds. All specimens were thermocycled for 500 cycles; then stored a 0,5% basic fuchsin solution for 24 hours. Then all the specimens were cut in mesio-distal direction and evaluated for microleakage with a microleakage scale between 0 and 4 microleakage scores were evaluated statistically with the help of Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric test. The least microleakage scores were obtained with the soft-start polymerization method LED light sources caused less microleakage scores compared to halogen light source. The results suggested that microleakage in the gingival margin could not be prevented.
