Abstract
The story of Layla and Majnun, which appeared in the Arab geography, has attracted the attention of many poets in Persian, Turkish and Urdu literatures and certain works were written on this subject. The story, which was written by many poets in masnavi verse, was also mentioned by means of references between verses. Sheikh Gâlib, accepted as the most popular poet of the18th century, also touched on the love of Layla and Majnun in his poems in various ways. Gâlib did not only mention the names of Layla and Majnun in his Divan, but also wrote a short “Hikâye-i Leylâ vü Mecnûn” in masnavi verse form. The verse, which is in the core form of the story of Layla and Majnun, consists of 18 couplets. In terms of literary history, it is worthwhile to show that the poet wrote a Layla and Majnun mesnevi, albeit briefly. In this study, the poem named “Hikâye-i Leylâ vü Mecnûn” written in the mesnevi verse form in the Divan of Sheikh Galib was examined in terms of its content.
