Abstract

In recent years, an increase in the prevalence of allergic diseases has been reported, particularly in industrialised countries. It is also a problem in non-industrialised countries, but its extent has been less well documented. In this study, inhalant screening allergens (AlaTOP®), food screening allergens (FP5E®), total and specific IgE levels were measured in 237 allergic patients (164 adults and 73 children), to examine the distribution of allergens, percentage of atopy/non-atopy among allergic children and adults in a developing country which has distinct environments and societies from Western countries. The percentages of atopy in children and in adults were 45% and 47%, respectively. The percentage of atopic males in the group of children (31%) was higher than for females (13%) while atopic females (25%) were more than males (21%) in adults. Most frequent allergen in childhood was cow milk while it was Lolium perenne(grass) in adults. Total IgE levels were found statistically different between atopic and non-atopic subjects in adults (p0.05). It is concluded that, the distribution of allergens in both groups have been differing with many factors such as age, sex, the amount and nature of allergens in different environments.
