Abstract
To determine the frequency, location, size, and risk factors for silent cerebral infarctions (SCIs) on brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), we identified 96 healthy subjects. On the baseline MRI, 26 subjects (26.4%) had SCIs; 66.6 % of the lesions were in the right hemisphere, 16.7% in the left hemisphere, and 16.7% were bilateral. The average size of lesions was 15±10mm. Subjects with SCI were compared with subjects without SCI for each risk factor. On univariate analysis, the only demographic variable associated with an increased frequency of SCI was age. Other risk factors were not related to the presence of SCI. Cortical atrophy and periventricular hyperintensity were usually associated with SCI but it's not statistically significant
