Abstract

The mitochondrion, found in almost all human cells, is the only organelle that contains DNA, except for the nucleus. Mitochondrial gene defects lead to different diseases and syndromes with varying symptoms and severity. “Mitochondrial replacement therapy,” introduced in 2008, has been a milestone in the treatment of mitochondrial diseases, for which there is still no cure. Babies resulting from this procedure, colloquially called “three-parent babies,” are conceived with the use of assisted reproductive technologies and genetic material from two women and one man. This study deals with mitochondrial replacement therapy from medical, ethical, and legal perspectives.
