Determining the thoughts of the maternity ward inpatients towards male nurses

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the thoughts of the inpatients in maternity wards towards the male nurses. Method: The descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in Obstetrics and Gynecology services of Ataturk University Aziziye Research Hospital. Women who had been hospitalized at above departments between 1 November to 30 December 2010 constituted the population group of the study. No sampling method was used; totally 530 women that accepted to participate in the study were included in the study. Data were collected through a questionnaire prepared by the researchers. Mean, standard deviation, number, percentage distributions and chi-square tests were used to evaluate data. Results: Average age of the female participants was 35.33±11.84 and 40.4% of them were primary school graduates. 25.3% of the patients were never hospitalized previously and 71.9% have never received nursing care from a male nurse. It was determined that majority of women had negative thoughts about the male nurses and that they preferred to receive nursing care from female nurses. Conclusion: It was also identified that the women with a low level of education, who have never received nursing care from a male nurse previously, had more negative thoughts towards the male nurses and thought that they would be uncomfortable receiving care from the male nurses.

Amaç: Bu çalışma kadın doğum servislerinde yatmakta olan hastaların erkek hemşireler hakkında düşüncelerini belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Yöntem: Kesitsel ve tanımlayıcı nitelikteki bu araştırma Atatürk Üniversitesi Aziziye Araştırma Hastanesinin Kadın Doğum servislerinde yapılmıştır. Araştırmanın evrenini yukarıda belirtilen servislerde 1 Kasım-30 Aralık 2010 tarihleri arasında yatmakta olan kadınlar oluşturmuştur. Araştırmada herhangi bir örnekleme yöntemine gidilmemiş belirtilen evrenden araştırmaya katılmayı kabul eden 530 kadın araştırmaya dahil edilmiştir. Veriler araştırmacılar tarafından hazırlanan anket formu aracılığı ile toplanmıştır. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde; ortalama, standart sapma, sayı, yüzdelik hesaplamaları ve Ki-kare önemlilik testleri kullanılmıştır. Bulgular: Çalışmaya katılan kadınların yaş ortalaması 35.33±11.84’tür ve %40.4’ü ilkokul mezunudur. Hastaların %25.3’ü daha önce hiç hastaneye yatmamış ve %71.9’u da daha önce erkek bir hemşireden bakım almamıştır. Kadınların çoğunluğunun erkek hemşireler hakkındaki düşüncelerinin olumsuz olduğu, bakım almada bayan hemşireyi tercih ettikleri belirlenmiştir. Sonuç: Eğitim düzeyi düşük olan ve daha önce erkek bir hemşireden bakım almayan kadınların erkek hemşirelere yönelik daha olumsuz düşüncelere sahip olduğu ve erkek hemşirelerden bakım almaktan rahatsız olacaklarını düşündükleri saptanmıştır.
