A SEMIOTIC APPROACH TO EDIP HARABI’S “VAHDETNAME”

Abstract

Edip Harabi whose real name was AhmetEdip was one of the leading Sufi poetsof the nineteenth century. The poems in hishand-written divan, particularly his ‘nefes’called “Vahdetname” gave a new impulseto Sufi literature. As it is well known, poetryhas the most multilayered and thedeepest linguistic patterns among all otherliterary genre. As the nefes poem is on Sufismthese features gain strength. Thus, itis needed to analyze this multilayered anddeep structure of nefes poems thoroughcontemporary literary analysis methods.Therefore, it is aimed in this article to rereadEdip Harabi’s nefes called “Vahdetname”through semiotic approach.One of the fundamental poems inEdip Harabi’s Divan is beyond doubt “Vahdetname”.The main reason of this estimationis “Vahdetname” narrates the Sufiviewpoint quite briefly and intensively.Hence, the poem summarizes entire historyof the universe and humanity from the beginningof life till the lives of the prophets.With his “Vahdetname” Harabi, likepreceding Sufis, opened a new door intosemantic interpretations apart from literalexpression (only for common people to understand)and did this by building a strongstructure in his work. In this context, “Vahdetname”cannot be interpreted only thoroughthe Sufi terms used. On the contrary,it is needed to reveal references and semanticbonds both in terms of context andform, and to reread these semantic bondsin depth. The most appropriate method forsuch a study seems to be the semiotic approach.

Asıl adı Ahmet Edip olan, Edip Harabi on dokuzuncu yüzyılın en önemli tasavvuf şairidir. Onun kendi el yazısıyla oluşturdu- ğu divanındaki şiirleri, özellikle de "Vahdetname" isimli nefesi tasavvuf edebiyatına yeni bir soluk getirmiştir. Bilindiği gibi şiir tüm yazınsal türler içinde en katmanlı ve en derin dilsel örüntülere sahiptir. Söz konusu nefes tasavvufla ilgili olunca bu katmanlılık ve derinlik daha da artmaktadır. Dolayısıyla bu katmanlı ve derin yapı çağdaş çözümleme yöntemleriyle de okunmalıdır. Bu nedenle çalışmamızda, Edip Harabi'nin "Vahdetname" adlı nefesi, çağdaş yöntemlerden biri olan göstergebilimsel yöntemle yeniden okunmaya çalışılacaktır. Edip Harabi'nin "Divanı"ndaki en temel şiirlerinden biri kuşkusuz Vahdetname'dir. Bunun en önemli sebe bi ise, tasavvufi bakışın "Vahdetname"de oldukça kısa ve yoğun bir biçimde anlatılmasıdır. Nitekim varoluşun başlamasından peygamberlerin hayatına dek tasavvufi felsefe eşliğinde bütün insanlık ve evren tarihinin bir şiirde özetlenmesi bunun en bü- yük göstergesidir. Harabi, "Vahdetname" ile kendisinden önce gelen tasavvufçular gibi bize lafzi ifade (sadece halkın anlayacağı) dışında bir anlamsal yorumun kapılarını açmıştır ve bunu eserinde güçlü bir biçimde kurgulayarak yapmıştır. Bu bağlamda bakıldığında eser, sadece içinde geçen tasavvuf terimleriyle açıklanamaz. Tam tersine eserin hem içeriksel hem de biçimsel düzeyinde göndergelerin ve anlamsal bağların ortaya çı- karılması, derin yapıda bu göndergelerin ve anlamsal bağların yeniden okunması gerekmektedir. Bunun için de ancak çağdaş yöntemlerden biri olan göstergebilim okuma yöntemi olarak kullanılabilir.
