A Preliminary Report: The Arykanda Excavations of 2011, The TK3 Hoard

Abstract

During excavations conducted in the city of Arykanda in 2011, a hoard consisting of 259 coins, was found at the site called TK3. Only 218 of these 259 coins could be identified. 41 of these coins could not be identified due to their poor condition. 4 of these 218 identifiable coins date from the first century B.C., while 214 of them date from between the years 305-457 A.D. Most of these coins date from between years 395 and 423 A.D. Excluding the first century B.C. examples, the coins in this hoard date to the period from the Emperor Constantinus until the Emperor Marcianus. Identified in this hoard were: 29 coins from the period of the Constantine dynasty, 43 coins to the period of the Valentin dynasty, 16 coins to the period of Theodosius I, 115 coins to period of Arcadius, Honorius and Theodosius II, and one coin dates from the reign of Marcianus. The identifiable TK3 hoard coins in respect to periods is given in Table 1, of the distribution of coins of the emperors in Table 2. The largest number of coins in this hoard were minted in Antiocheia (Antioch).

Arykanda Kentinde 2011 yılında yapılan kazı çalışmalarında TK3 olarak adlandırılan mekanda 259 adet sikkeden oluşan define ele geçmiştir. Defineye ait 259 adet sikkeden 218'i tanımlanabilmiştir. 41 adet sikke ise düşük kondisyonlarından dolayı tanımlanamamıştır. Tanımlanabilen 218 sikkenin 4'ü M.Ö. I. yüzyıla, 214'ü ise M.S. 305-457 yılları arasına tarihlendirilmektedir. Definenin dönemlere göre dağılımında M.S. 395-423 yılları arası darp edilen sikkeler yoğunluk göstermektedir. TK3 definesindeki sikkeler, M.Ö. I. yüzyıla tarihlendirilen 4 sikke dışında İmparator I. Constantinus'dan İmparator Marcianus'a kadar olan dönemi kapsamaktadır. Define içerisinde Constantin'ler dönemine tarihlendirilen 29, Valentin'ler dönemine tarihlendirilen 43, I. Theodosius dönemine tarihlendirilen 16, Arcadius, Honorius ve II. Theodosius dönemlerine tarihlendirilen 115, Marcianus dönemine tarihlendirilen 1 adet sikke tespit edilmiştir. TK3 definesinin Tablo 1'de dönemlerine, Tablo 2'de imparatorlara göre dağılımına bakıldığında İmparator Arcadius, Honorius ve II. Theodosius dönemlerinde darp edilen sikkelerin en yüksek orana sahip olduğu görülmektedir. Darphane olarak da Antiocheia darphanesinin en yüksek orana sahip olduğu görülmektedir.
