The Story of Joseph and Zulaikha as an Anonymous Text Written in Old Anatolian Turkish

Abstract

The story of Joseph and Zulaikha which whose roots can be found in the Torah, the Bible and the Quran is called “the most beautiful of all stories” and is recited in many cultures all around the world with local varieties that are shaped by the tellers’ own cultural resources. The story of Joseph and Zulaikha gives a variety of messages in the Torah and the Bible but specifically through the Quran, it gives such messages as patience, brotherhood, love for children, justice, lawful and unlawful, treason, righteousness and worldly love among many others. The story of Joseph and Zulaikha is not told by Moslem Turks but also by Arabs and Farsis although the Turks have produced the most artistic stories of the kind as the Turks are known to give special respect and love to this story although they were introduced to this much later than other Moslem cultures. In this study, the story of Joseph and Zulaikha which is anonymous and written outside the borders of Anatolia is interrogated by emphasizing its grammatical, vocal and formal qualities.

Özet

Kaynağını semavî dinlerden alan önce Tevrat, sonra İncil ve daha sonra da Kur’an-ı Kerim’de “hikâyelerin en güzeli” biçimiyle zikredilen Yûsuf ve Züleyhâ hikâyesi, tarihin ilk dönemlerinden başlayıp daha sonra yazılı ve sözlü kültür geleneğinin içerisinde yaşayarak günümüze kadar ulaşan ve bütün dünya toplumlarının ilgi gösterip yaşatmaya devam ettirdiği dinî kaynaklı hikâyelerden biridir. Yûsuf ve Züleyhâ hikâyesi, batı toplumlarına Tevrat ve İncil üzerinden değişik mesajlar verirken doğu toplumlarına ise Kur’an kaynaklı sabır, kardeşlik, evlat sevgisi, adalet, haram-helal, ihanet, doğruluk, dünyevî aşk… gibi kavramlar üzerinden mesajlar vermiştir. Yûsuf ve Züleyhâ hikâyesi, sadece İslâm medeniyeti içerisindeki Türkler tarafından değil, Arap ve Fars kavimleri tarafından da beğenilerek birçok kez yazılmıştır. İslâm medeniyeti kültür dairesi içerisinde en fazla Yûsuf ve Züleyha kıssası yazan milletlerden birisi de Türklerdir. Söz konusu çalışmamızda, yurt dışından temin ettiğimiz, müellifi belli olmayan Eski Anadolu Türkçesinin imla, ses ve şekil özeliklerini gösteren Yûsuf ve Züleyha hikâyesi üzerinde durulacaktır.
