A Portrait Head from the Side Theater

Abstract

This study, introduces a marble portrait head that was recovered during the theater excavation of 2000 in Side. The fact that the parts below the neck were broken off and missing, but the head between the chin and the upper point of the head was well preserved provided important data for the calculation of the total height of the work. Accordingly, it is suggested that the head might belong to a statue of human dimensions (life-sized). Representing a man over middle age with a mustache and beard, this sculpture was considered as falling within a private portrait category with its unique facial features, strong forehead structure, wrinkles and upper lip overhanging the lower lip. The long beard of this portrait extending from the bottom of the chin to the beginning of the neck, the eyeballs processed with a double drill stroke, and the iris accentuated by a scraped line, seem to have followed traits in style of IIIrd century portraits. The fact that this work was recovered as reused material within a wall dated to a later period within the theater structure, and its level of preservation, to date has not permitted comment on the original context. However, the aim of this article was to examine the wall where the portrait head was employed as reused material, the theater, and of Side, within the history of urbanism.

Özet

Bu çalışma ile 2000 yılında Side’de tiyatro kazısında ele geçen mermer bir portre başın tanıtılmasıamaçlanmaktadır. Boyundan aşağısı kırık ve eksik başın, çene ile başın üst noktası arasındaki kısmının iyikorunmuş olması, toplam yüksekliğinin hesaplanabilmesi adına önemli bir veri olmuştur. Böylece başıninsan ölçülerine sahip bir heykele ait olabileceği önerilebilmiştir. Orta yaşın üzerinde bir erkeği temsileden bıyıklı ve sakallı eser, kendine has yüz özellikleri, güçlü alın yapısı, kırışıklıkları, alt dudağınüzerine doğru sarkıtılan üst dudağı ile özel portre kategorisinde değerlendirilmiştir. Eserin çene altındanboyun başlangıcına kadar devam eden uzun sakalları, çift matkap darbesi ile işlenmiş göz bebekleri vekazıma çizgi ile verilen irisi, stil olarak MS III. yüzyıl portrelerini takip eder. Eserin tiyatro yapısıiçerisinde geç döneme tarihlendirilen bir duvarın içerisinde devşirme malzeme olarak ele geçmiş olmasıve korunmuşluk düzeyi şimdiye kadar orijinal konteksi hakkında yorum yapmaya imkân tanımamıştır.Ancak burada portre başın, için de devşirme malzeme olarak kullanıldığı duvar ile birlikte tiyatronun veSide’nin şehircilik tarihi içindeki yerinin incelenmesi amaçlanmaktadır.
