Through the Eyes of Tourist Guide Candidates: Tourist Guide Departments’ Courses and Errors in Practices

Abstract
This study with the aim of satisfying the sector’s needs, seeks to answer the question of how must the education be for a tourist guide. Due to the period of courses arranged today in departments of the Tourism faculty and in vocational high schools, with the developments and changes both in our country and the world, it’s the inevitable that the guidance provided by Tourism Guide courses be updated, according to the dynamics and novelties of the age. On the other hand the complaints of the candidates for tourist guides, in continuing education and the newly graduated has progressively increased over recent years. The observations made in the implementation trips and the degree of success in the language exams, which is the one of the condition of acceptance into the profession, show the rightfulness of the critics. It has been inevitable that queries arise concerning the guidance department and the quality of the education. As a part of this study, the course schedules of 18 Tourism Guidance departments at universites were brought together and these were compared with those provided by foreign guidance education programs. Thus the lessons which must be taught in the education periods, the intensity of the lessons and the lessons which are thought to be unnecessary for the work of guides, even though thay are on the schedule of courses were determined and some solutions are presented. In the light of academician staff opening practices according to common lessons in tourism faculties and the lessons which must be in the education of the guidance, if tourist guidance departments add to social and human sciences faculties by leaving from tourism faculties
Özet
Bu çalışma sektörün ihtiyaçları doğrultusunda, günümüzde turist rehberi eğitiminin nasıl olması gerektiğisorusuna yanıt aramaktır. Fakülte ve meslek yüksek okullarında rehberlik bölümleri programlarının düzenlen-diği dönemlerden günümüze değin, gerek ülkemizde gerekse dünyada yaşanan gelişmeler ve değişimler, dersprogramlarının çağın dinamiklerine ve yeniliklerine uygun olarak güncellenmesini kaçınılmaz kılmıştır. Bunakarşın son yıllarda öğretimi devam eden rehber adaylarının ve yeni mezunların üniversitelerde verilen eğitim-den şikayetleri gittikçe artmaktadır. Uygulama gezilerindeki gözlemler ve mesleğe kabul şartlarından birisi olanyabancı dil sınavındaki başarı oranları, eleştirilerin haklılığına işaret etmektedir. Rehberlik bölümlerindeki artışve verilen eğitimin niteliklerinin sorgulanması kaçınılmaz bir hal almıştır. Araştırma kapsamında 18 üniversite-nin rehberlik bölümleri ders programları çıkarılmış ve yurtdışındaki rehberlik eğitimi programlarıyla karşılaş-tırılmıştır. Böylece, öğretim sürecinde verilmesi gereken dersler ve ders yoğunlukları ile programlarda yer al-malarına rağmen rehberlik mesleği için gereksiz olduğu düşünülen dersler belirlenip çözüm önerileri sunul-muştur. Turizm fakültelerinde, ortak derslere göre akademisyen kadrosu açma uygulamaları ve rehberlik eğiti-minde olması gereken dersler göz önüne alındığında, turist rehberliği bölümlerinin turizm fakültelerinden ayrı-larak sosyal ve beşeri bilimler ya da insan ve toplum bilimleri fakülteleri bünyesine dahil edilmeleri mesleğinve ülke turizminin geleceği için daha faydalı olacaktır.
