Abstract
Yaşar Kemal and Gabriel Garcia Márquez are two great narrators who show similar characteristics with the source of the events they deal with in their novels, their style of expression and their contribution to the novel technique. It is possible to identify these similarities based on Yaşar Kemal’s To Crush the Serpent and Márquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold novels. While both novels deal with the issue of vendetta in their own localities, they seek universal feelings about humanity. The authors skilfully fictionalized the blood feud murders, which they themselves witnessed in some way, and carried the real life into the novel. The common point of the murders described in these novels is that they were committed as a result of social pressures. Being pushed into crime by society and the destructive aspects of mass psychology are the starting point of these novels. In these novels belonging to different geographies and cultures, the unique characteristics of Çukurova and Latin America and scenes of daily life take an important place. However, in these societies, which basically reflect the general characteristics of patriarchal mindset, it is seen from the novels that there are similar features in the approach to concepts such as “custom”, “blood feud”, “honour”, “woman”. In the present study, the novels To Crush the Serpent and Chronicle of a Death Foretold are compared in terms of their approaches to the problem of blood feud, and the perspectives of these two important authors on a universal subject are evaluated.
Özet
Yaşar Kemal ve Gabriel Garcia Márquez, romanlarında ele aldıkları olayların kaynağı, anlatım tarzları ve roman tekniğine katkılarıyla benzer özellikler gösteren iki büyük anlatıcıdır. Yaşar Kemal’in Yılanı Öldürseler ve Márquez’in Kırmızı Pazartesi romanlarından yola çıkarak bu benzerlikleri tespit etmek mümkündür.
