Abstract

In the digitalised feld of journalism, Google trends have a direct effect on which topics the journalists are to report. This new situation has resulted in the appearance of a new journalistic practice which has never been encountered in traditional journalism before, and is now known as search engine optimization in newspapers, and the employment of journalists known as SEO (Search Engine Optimization) editors by news agencies. As shown in the fndings of this study, the formation in most national newspapers of SEO units makes the topic important from the perspective of journalism. The aim of this study is to defne the topic of SEO editorship, which is new in journalism, and to set out its aims and the strategies which it uses. As part of the research, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the SEO editors of the Turkish national newspapers whose websites are the most visited, which are Hürriyet, Sabah, Habertürk, and Sözcü. According to the results of the study, the editors interviewed viewed SEO editorship as a new feld of journalism, and they stated that the work they did basically created “empathy with the reader”. However, six basic differences were found between SEO journalism and traditional journalism practices in terms of a) news topic, b) news factors, c) working practices, d) news sources, e) news writing, and f) the aims of journalism. The strategies of the SEO editors to boost their news on Google were grouped under eight main headings. These were “the use of the keyword or key question which the reader searched for in the article or heading”, “being the frst to enter the news on the web”, “routine SEO news”, “the creation of evergreen content”, “varying the news topic”, “the ability to produce a distinctive content”, “providing support to other editors on the readability of a news item”, and “conforming to the Google algorithm”.
