From the Anxiety of Influence to Destruction of the Object of Desire: The Construction of "the Other" in Discourse by Architect Turgut

Abstract

This article aims to analyse the construction of "a series of others" in Cansever's discourse on architecture, architectural history, collective identity and heritage, and it attempts to explicate it through trying to answer questions such as under which cultural, ideological, socio-political and professional conditions he constructed his notion of "the other" in his narratives, and which historiographical strategies he fallowed. Here it has been claimed due to a conservative, nationalist shame-code, Cansever had a difficulty in expressing his admiration of the art and architecture of an imagined West, and he could justify his admiration only as long as he could relate it to an equally imagined Islamic Turkish history of art and architecture; in the event that he could not do that, he had developed an inclination to destroy his object of desire. Here, the concepts such as, "us and them" by Zygmunt Bauman, "anxiety of influence" by Harold Bloom, "fear of being penetrated" in national historiography by Kafadar "moral innovator" by John Hutchinson's are used to form the theoretical framework of the article.

Bu makalede mimar Turgut Cansever'in, tarih ve mimarlık algısının şekillenmesinde devraldığı siyasi ve sosyo-kültürel koşulların neler olduğu, idealize edilmiş bir "biz" tanımlamak üzere "öteki"ni hangi tarihyazımsal stratejilerle nasıl icat ve inşa ettiği, bireysel ve kolektif anlamda geliştirdiği, önerdiği "özcü" kimliğin bileşenlerinin nelerden oluştuğu sorularına cevap aranmaktadır. Burada Cansever'in bilinçaltında ötekine karşı duyduğu hayranlığı bir mahcubiyet olarak yaşadığı, onu kendi kültürü olarak tanımladığı değerlerle ilişkilendirmeden benimseyemediği, "öteki"ne ait olanı dönüştüremediği yerde ise, arzu nesnesini tahrip etme eğilimi geliştirdiği savlanmaktadır. Yakın okuma aracığıyla gerçekleştirilen bu eleştirel söylem analizinin kuramsal çerçevesini, Zygmunt Bauman'ın "Biz ve Onlar", Herold Bloom'un "etkilenme kaygısı", Cemal Kafadar'ın "penetre edilme korkusu" ve Hutchinson'un "ahlaki müceddid", "moral innovator" kavramları oluşturmaktadır.
