Academic and Psycho-Social Effects of the COVID-19 Epidemic on Children

Abstract

The COVID-19 epidemic, which has affected the whole world, has brought many changes in people's normal living conditions. These changes have affected individuals of all ages and developmental stages in different ways. It has become an important problem for many disciplines dealing with the development of children, especially how children can be affected by the changing living conditions with the epidemic in the short and long term. In this study, it is aimed to reveal expert opinions on how primary school children can be affected academically and psychosocially by the COVID-19 epidemic process. The research was carried out using the phenomenology model, one of the qualitative research models. In the study, the opinions of 25 experts who were selected from the fields of psychological counseling and guidance, psychology, psychiatry, child development and basic education and who had at least a doctorate degree were consulted with the purposeful sampling method. In this direction, the data related to the research were collected with a semi-structured interview form prepared by the researchers. The findings obtained from the research were examined under two main categories as academic and psychosocial effects. While it was determined that all of the themes and codes in the category of academic effects consisted of data containing negative effects, it was determined that the themes and codes in the category of psychosocial effects mostly consisted of data containing negative effects, apart from providing positive contributions to the development of strengthened parent-child relationship, new normals and new relationship-building schemes.

Tüm dünyayı etkisi altına alan covid 19 salgını insanların normal yaşam koşullarında pek çok değişimi de beraberinde getirmiştir. Bu değişimler ise her yaş ve gelişim dönemindeki bireyler farklı biçimlerde etkilemiştir. Özellikle çocukların salgınla değişen yaşam koşullarından kısa ve uzun süreli nasıl etkilenebilecekleri çocukların gelişimini konu alan birçok disiplin için önemli bir sorun haline gelmeye başlamıştır. Bu çalışmada ilkokul dönemindeki çocukların covid 19 salgını sürecinden akademik ve psiko-sosyal açıdan nasıl etkilenebileceklerine ilişkin uzman görüşlerinin ortaya konulması amaçlanmıştır. Araştırma, nitel araştırma modellerinden olgu bilim (fenomenoloji) modeli kullanılarak gerçekleştirilmiştir.Çalışmada amaçlı örnekleme yöntemi ile psikolojik danışma ve rehberlik, psikoloji, psikiyatri, çocuk gelişimi ve temel eğitim alanlarından seçilen ve en az doktora derecesine sahip olan 25 uzmanın görüşüne başvurulmuştur. Bu doğrultuda araştırmaya ilişkin veriler, araştırmacılar tarafından hazırlanmış olan yarı yapılandırılmış bir görüşme formu ile toplanmıştır. Araştırmadan elde edilen bulgular akademik ve psiko-sosyal etkiler olmak üzere iki temel kategori altında incelenmiştir. Akademik etkiler kategorisinde yer alan tema ve kodların tamamının olumsuz etkileri içeren verilerden oluştuğu tespit edilirken, psiko-sosyal etkiler kategorisinde yer alan tema ve kodların ise güçlenen ebeveyn çocuk ilişkisi, yeni normaller ve yeni ilişki kurma şemalarının gelişimine ilişkin olumlu katkılar sağlama dışında çoğunlukla olumsuz etkiler içeren verilerden oluştuğu belirlenmiştir.
