Efforts for the Restoration of the Alaeddin Mosque, Eskisehir (1878-1886)

Abstract

The subject of this study are the efforts undertaken in restoration made to the Alaeddin Mosque in Eskisehir in the Ottoman period. The most important material upon which this study is based are the documents in the Ottoman Archives of the Prime Ministry. Through these documents, including the correspondence between 1878 and 1886, it appears that the mosque was then in need of restoration. Prior to the restoration of the dilapidated mosque, an exploratory study was carried out by the town’s architect. At the end of this research, the extent of the dilapidations was evaluated and the cost of the materials to be used for this restoration and the labour required was estimated. Following this, the project was put out for tender at the assessed cost and the procedure commenced. During our research at the mosque, an inscription concerning the restoration which is mentioned in the documents was not to be found. However, it is possible to see some evidence of the restoration recorded in the documents. The decorative compositions on the mihrab are the most important elements which resemble those recorded in the documents concerning this restoration. Together with the documents concerning this restoration, the documents also provide information concerning the work undertaken outside the mosque itself, the buildings that were to be added and evidence concerning the practice of 19th century construction and restoration in the country

Özet

Bu çalışmada, Eskişehir Alâeddin Camisi'nin Osmanlı döneminde onarılmasına yönelik girişimler ele alınmıştır. Çalışmaya temel olan en önemli materyali, Başbakanlık Osmanlı Arşivi'nde yer alan belgeler oluşturmaktadır. 1878-1886 yılları arasındaki yazışmaları içeren belgelerden, 19. yüzyılın sonlarına gelindiğinde caminin onarıma muhtaç bir vaziyette olduğu anlaşılmaktadır. Harap durumda bulunan caminin onarımı öncesinde şehir mimarı tarafından keşif çalışması yapılmıştır. Çalışma sonucunda hasar tespiti yapılmış ve onarımda kullanılacak malzemeler ile işçilik ücretleri hesaplanarak maliyet çıkarılmıştır. Ardından belirlenen maliyet üzerinden ihale açılmış ve süreç başlatılmıştır. Camide yaptığımız incelemelerde belgelerde geçen onarımlara dair herhangi bir kitabe bulunamamıştır. Bununla birlikte belgelerde ifade edilen hususlardan bazılarının yapıdaki izlerine ulaşılabilmektedir. Mihrap üzerindeki süsleme kompozisyonları onarıma ilişkin belgelerin tarihleri ile paralellik sergileyen en önemli unsurdur. Belgelerde yer alan bilgiler, yapının onarımının yanı sıra çevresinde yapılan işler, ilave edilecek birimler ile 19. yüzyıl imar organizasyonunun taşradaki işleyişi hakkında da bilgi vermektedir
