University Prep Schools Debate: The Journalistic Discourse on the Clash between the AK Party Government and the Gülen Movement

Abstract

AK Party Government prepared law regarding the prep schools, which are preparing students for the national university exam. According to this law prep schools have to be closed or converted into private schools that will be controlled by the Ministry of Education of Turkey. This issue caused heavy conflicts. These longstanding conflicts on the agenda have brought about political unrest between AK Party and the Gülen Movement, and the topic has been turned from an issue of education into power struggle between AK Party and the Gülen Movement. The aim of study which concerns about how this process has been addressed on newspaper reports is to discuss reflections of the conflict between AK Party and the Gülen Movement in the background ofthe agenda ofthe closure ofthe prep schools. In this study in which the newspaper reports are analyzed through the eun Van Dijk’s critical discourse analysis. The Sabah, Zaman, Taraf, Hürriyet and Cumhuriyet newspapers are examined, and the reports (from November 15 to December 4) regarding the decree of the closure of prep schools are analyzed. Furthermore some photographs on the newspapers regarding this subject are analyzed through Roland Barthes’ conceptualizations of denotation and connotation.

AK Parti iktidarının dershanelerin kapatılarak özel okula dönüşmesi ya da tamamen kapatılmasının yolunu açacak yasa hazırlığına girmesi, Türkiye 'de yoğun tartışmaların yaşanmasına neden olmuştur. Gündemden uzun süre düşmeyen tartışmalar AK Parti ile Gülen Cemaati arasında huzursuzluğa yol açmış, konu eğitim meselesi olmaktan çıkarılarak AK Parti ile Cemaat arasında iktidar/güç mücadelesi haline dönüştürülmüştür. Bu sürecin gazete haberlerinde nasıl yer bulduğunu konu alan bu çalışmanın amacı, dershanelerin kapatılması gündeminin arka planındaki AK Parti ile Gülen Cemaati arasındaki gerilimin yansımalarını ele almaktır. eun Van Diik'in eleştirel söylem çözümlemesi yönteminden yararlanılarak haberlerin analiz edildiği bu makalede, söz konusu gazetelerde haberlerin ne şekilde yer aldığı, neden sonuç bağlantıları kurularak, karşılaştırmalı olarak irdelenmiştir. Sabah, Zaman, Taraf, Hürriyet ve Cumhuriyet gazeteleri incelenip, 15 Kasım-- Aralık 2013 tarihlerinde yer alan dershanelerin kapatılma kararına ilişkin haberler analiz edilmiştir. Çözümlemenin eksiksiz biçimde yapılabilmesi için konuyla ilgili gazetelerdeki bazı fotoğraflar göstergebilimsel çözümlemeye tabi tutulmuş ve özellikle Roland Barthes 'ın düz anlam--yan anlam kavramsallaştırmalarından da yola çıkarak yorumlanmıştır.
