Abstract

The question of the possibility of education, which states that human can change and transform through education, is largely discussed within the nature of human nature. Because human nature refers to the predispositions and the abilities that education will handle. This study focuses on the meanings of the fitrah (disposition) and the mizaj (temprement), which express the essential nature of man in Ghazzālī’s thought, how they differ and how they can be understood in terms of the educational process. The purpose of focusing on these two concepts in the study is that they are the central terms that determine the scope and the content of education in his thought. The study is largely based on the evaluation of primary sources – Ghazzālī’s works themselves, as there is not any study in the literature that focuses on these concepts in terms of Ghazzālī’s thought. Fitrah and mizaj in Ghazzālī’s thought express that education is possible, but also determines its limits. According to Ghazzālī, who sees man as being composed of spirit (nafs) and body, fitrah expresses the nature of the spiritual aspect of man; mizaj refers to the nature of the physical aspect of man. Even though he uses fitrah in different meanings, the actual meaning that he attributes to the fitrah is the ability of all people to know their creator. This ability, which people find ready in their disposition (fitrah) while coming to this world, offers the possibility to get to know their creator and the things (ashyā’). This ability is common for every person. Unlike the fitrah, the mizaj is used in only meaning: Mizaj is the most general expression of human character traits and predispositions. According to the temprement (mizaj) understanding that Ghazzālī was largely inherited from the philosophy of Ibn Sīnā, every person's temperament is different. Unlike the fitrah, mizaj, which is unique for every person, is also the determining factor of limits of the education.
