Abstract

Different proofs have been developed by Muslim thinkers to explain the existence of God on a rational plane. Hudūth evidence (argument from contingency) is an argument for God s existence classified among the cosmological arguments. This argument is is very atractive to Muslim theoligians for a variety of reasons; among which we may count the fact that it takes its point of departure from the objective reality, emphasizing clearly differences betwen God and the world and being more compatitible with theory of creation ex-nihilo. We encounter this argument with its basic concepts and primitive shape in the works of the theologians from the first century of Islam. Muslim theoligians attributed a great importance to this argument and thus it was gradually developed into a sophisticated philosophical argument in the sunsequent centuries. This article examines the development of the hudūth evidence in its history. We attempt to show how al- Juwayni developed it and how it was consolidated by Shahristānī.
