Abstract

This study aims to determine the opinions of social studies teachers about the teaching of current issues. The study model is case study, which is among qualitativere search methods. The study group, on the other hand, consists of 12 social studies teachers whorender service at official secondary schools in the school year of 2016-2017. The data were collected by using semi-structured interview form. The data acquired from the study, on the other hand, were analyzed viade scriptive analysis method. As a result of the study; social studies teachers stated that current issues would prepare students to life, increase the irinterest in the lesson and enable them to participate in the lesson more actively. They also stated that current issues would enable students to be raised as active citizens witnessing thereal condition of society. The teachers indicated that they considered current issues a supplementary for social studies lesson andused them in the class when necessary. They stated that they mainly used question-answerand discussion methods whilet eaching current issues. It was determined that they paid attent ionto a voiding political issues and preferring issues regarding society and acquisitions. They indicated that coups, terror and anarchy had to be involve damong current issues at mostand found school books insufficient in terms of current issues. The teachers alsoindicated thatt here were problems about current issues as students would come to the class with prejudices obtained from their families and environment, there wasn’t enough time and the issues would be brought to politics.

Özet

Bu çalışmanın amacı; sosyal bilgiler öğretmenlerinin güncel konuların öğretimine ilişkin görüşlerini belirlemektir. Araştırmanın modeli nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden olan bir durum çalışmasıdır. Çalışma grubunu 2016-2017 eğitim-öğretim yılında resmi ortaokullarda görev yapan 12 sosyal bilgiler öğretmeni oluşturmaktadır. Verilerinin toplanmasında yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formu kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada elde edilen veriler ise betimsel analizi yöntemiyle çözümlenmiştir. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre Sosyal bilgiler öğretmenleri güncel konuların öğrencileri hayata hazırladığını, onların derse olan ilgisini artırdığını ve derse daha aktif katılmasına olanak sağladığını belirtmişlerdir. Bununla birlikte, öğrencilerin içinde bulunduğu toplumun gerçek durumuna yakından şahitlik ederek etkin vatandaşlar olarak yetişmelerini yardımcı olduğunu ifade etmişlerdir. Öğretmenler güncel konuları sosyal bilgiler dersinin tamamlayıcısı olarak gördüklerini, derste yeri geldikçe kullandıklarını ifade etmişlerdir. Öğretmenler güncel konuları işlerken en fazla soru-cevap ve tartışma yöntemlerini kullandıklarını belirtmişlerdir. Ayrıca konuların siyasi içerikli olmamasına, toplumu ilgilendiren konular olmasına ve kazanımla bağlantılı olmasına dikkat ettikleri saptanmıştır. Güncel konular arasında en fazla darbeler, terör ve anarşinin olması gerektiğini belirterek ders kitaplarını da güncel konular bakımından yetersiz görmüşlerdir. Öğretmenler güncel konular ile ilgili olarak öğrencilerin aile ve çevrelerinde edindikleri önyargılarla derse gelmesini, yeterli zaman olmamasını ve konuların siyasete çekilmesini sorun olarak görmüşlerdir.
