Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess patient selection and efficacy of percutaneous drainage for the treatment of pancreatic abscesses. Methods:Percutaneous drainage under computerized tomography-guidance was performed on 10 patients who ranged in age from 28 to 72 years during a four study period. All patients had pancreatic abscesses. Patients with pancreatic pseudocysts, necrosis, or acute fluid collections were excluded from the study. Results:All patients were cured with percutaneous drainage without surgery. Twenty catheters were used and 30 catheter manipulations were required. The duration of catheterization ranged from 15 to 122 days, with a mean duration of 32 days. No procedure or catheter-related complications, such as bleeding or septicemia, occurred. Conclusions:Percutaneous drainage is a safe and valuable procedure in the treatment of patients with pancreatic abscesses. Patient selection, adequate drainage technique, and proper follow-up of the patients play an important role in the result of the d rainage.
