Abstract

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) seems to be the major etiologic agent of post-transfusion hepatitis. Therefore hemodialysis patients are at high risk for exposure to this virus. We have studied the frequency of anti-HCV in 99 patients with end stage renal disease on chronic he¬modialysis treatment of the same dialysis unit to assess whether HCV has a role in the pathogenesis of liver di¬sease in dialysis patients. Association of the anti-HCV carrier status to history of blood transfusions, ALT le¬vels, and duration on hemodialysis was evaluated. Sixty of 99(60.6%) hemodialysis patients had anti-HCV. The mean ALT level was 27.7 IU'/'ml. in seropositive patients whereas it was 16.0 lU/ml in seronegatives (p<0.05). The seropositive patients had been receiving dialysis for longer duration than seronegatives (t= 3.510, p<0.001). The history of blood transfusions did not correlate with seropositivity (p>0.05).
